Return to TranZit - An Ambitious Project for the Zombies Mode
Among the most ambitious Custom Zombies projects in recent years, Return to TranZit holds a very special place. Led by Verk0, this project aims to reimagine one of the most iconic - and controversial - maps in Zombies mode history: TranZit.

But Return to TranZit is neither a simple remake nor a nostalgic remaster. It’s a complete reimagination, designed with modern gameplay, level design, and immersion standards, while respecting the original map’s identity.
A Clear Vision: Transform TranZit into a True Playable World
The project’s core idea is simple but extremely ambitious: make every TranZit zone a genuine point of interest in its own right. Where the original map offered vast spaces that were sometimes underused or frustrating to navigate, Return to TranZit transforms each iconic location (Bus Depot, Tunnel, Diner, Farm, etc.) into extended, dense, and strategically interesting zones.
Each zone is:
- Fully explorable
- Designed to offer multiple playstyles (survival, movement, camping, training)
- Given its own visual and audio identity
- Rich enough to stand alone as a Survival map
This approach gives the whole project a rare coherence in the custom maps world, while strongly reinforcing replayability.
Deeply Rethought Gameplay
Beyond level design, Return to TranZit stands out through an intelligent overhaul of several key Zombies mode mechanics.
Advanced Upgrade System

Weapons receive special treatment with an advanced upgrade system. Each weapon can reach a “Mastered” level, with unique effects, dedicated visuals, and a true identity. The goal is clear: restore personality to weapons and prevent them from all looking the same once upgraded.
A Living, Technical, and Evolving Map
Return to TranZit is also an impressive project from a technical standpoint. Verk0 regularly documents the challenges encountered: Black Ops 3 engine limitations, complex lighting management, performance optimization, memory constraints… and especially the ingenious solutions implemented to overcome these obstacles.

Return To TranZit - Diner (Steam Workshop)

Return To TranZit - Tunnel (Steam Workshop)

Each new zone released as a Survival version allows the community to progressively discover the project’s scope, while serving as a testing ground to refine balancing and the overall experience.
My Contribution
If I’m talking about Return to TranZit today, it’s also because I had the chance to participate in the latest survival map release: Farm Survival. I was very happy to help Verk0 on this map and to contribute, at my level, to such a vast and demanding project.
This is as much a project I want to highlight as it is a tribute to a passionate, rigorous creator deeply invested in the Custom Zombies scene.
Why Return to TranZit Deserves Attention
Return to TranZit doesn’t simply seek to fix the original map’s flaws. It asks a much more interesting question: what would TranZit have looked like if it could have been developed without major technical constraints?
Through its ambition, its respect for Zombies gameplay, and the quality of its execution, Return to TranZit stands as one of the most remarkable custom projects in the modding scene.
If you’re a Zombies player curious to discover a modern and ambitious vision of TranZit, I strongly encourage you to try Farm Survival and follow the evolution of this extraordinary project.
